Axe

Meaning: a tool with a wooden handle and a metal blade that is sharp at one end. They are used for chopping wood or cutting down trees.

Examples: Be careful with that sharp axe.

Backpack

Meaning: a (large) bag that you carry on your back. It is made of strong material and is often used when hiking or walking to store your equipment.

Examples: She was wearing a heavy backpack.

Binoculars

Meaning: an instrument used to help you see objects in the distance. It consists of two small telescopes (one for each eye) joined together.

Examples: They looked at the birds through binoculars.

Boots

Meaning: a type of shoe that covers the whole foot and the lower part of the leg

Examples: There were big clumps of soil on his boots.

Barbecue / Grill

Meaning: a metal frame used for cooking food outdoors over an open fire.

Examples:  I put another steak on the barbecue.

Bedroll

Meaning: a thick piece of material that you can sleep on when you go camping. It is more comfortable to sleep on a bedroll than the hard ground. A bedroll can be rolled up when being carried or not in use.

Examples: Here, they sleep in bedrolls or in canvas tents, and eat hardtack and sip coffee heated over an open fire.

Campfire

Meaning: an outdoor fire made by people when they go camping. Sometimes it is used for cooking, for warmth or for light when camping.

Examples: We sat around the campfire telling stories and singing.

Campsite

Meaning: a piece of land where people on holiday can camp, usually with toilets and places for washing

Examples: It took us one hour to reach the campsite.

Camping stove / Camp stove

Meaning: a small portable stove powered by gas canisters. They are designed for cooking when camping.

Examples: She put corns on a camping stove.

Canoe

Meaning: a light narrow boat with pointed ends that you move along the water using a paddle.

Examples: We crossed the lake by canoe.

Compass

Meaning: an instrument with a needle that always points in the direction of magnetic north. It helps you find the direction you need to go in.

Examples: A compass shows you which direction is north.

Cooler

Meaning: a (usually large plastic) insulated container that keeps food and drink cold.

Examples: We’ve brought a cooler full of beer with us.

Camp bed

Meaning: a light bed that can be folded so that it can be easily carried and stored

Examples: He slept on a camp bed.

Deck chair / Deckchair

Meaning: a lightweight folding chair. It consists of a frame that has a piece of canvas that is used as the seat and back.

Examples: He is sitting in a deck chair.

Day pack

Meaning: a small backpack (= a bag used to carry things on your back), used especially when travelling or walking

Examples: The blanket is light and easy to carry in a daypack.

Dehydrated food

Meaning: A food that is not having the normal amount of water so it looks dry.

Examples: We have enough dehydrated food for the whole group.

First aid kit

Meaning: a small box containing items that can be used when helping a sick or injured person. It usually has useful emergency treatment items such as bandages, plasters (band aids) and antiseptic wipes.

Examples: They may be included in first aid kit and also in camping equipment.

Flashlight

Meaning: a small light that is held in the hand and usually gets its power from batteries.

Examples: She shone the flashlight into the dark..

Fishing rod

Meaning:  a long pole made of wood, plastic, etc. with some fishing line and a hook attached to the end of that line. It is used for catching fish.

Examples: Don’t forget to bring your fishing rod.

Lighter

Meaning: a small device for providing a flame for a cigarette, etc.

Examples: A lighter is a rare commodity here.

Hammock

Meaning: a net or strong piece of cloth, wide enough for a person to lie on, hanging between two poles or trees to which it is attached.

Examples: Hanging hammocks are a very comfortable place to relax and sleep.

Hiking boots

Meaning: a type of strong boot that covers the foot and ankle, designed for long walks in the countryside.

Examples: My new hiking boots will be great once I’ve broken them in.

Insect repellent

Meaning: a type of liquid or cream applied to the skin to keep insects away from you or to stop them from biting you.

Examples: I put on some insect repellent because there are many mosquitos around here.

Mosquito net

Meaning: a net that hangs over and around a bed to keep insects away from someone who is sleeping.

Examples: We slept on a large bed with a mosquito net.

Pup tent

Meaning: a small tent for two people.

Examples: Can I borrow your pup tent for a while?

Sleeping bag

Meaning:  a large, thick bag for sleeping in, especially when you are sleeping outside, for example in a tent

Examples: You should get a sleeping bag that is warm but light in weight.

Rope

Meaning: (a piece of) strong, thick string made of long twisted threads

Examples: He tightened up the rope a little.

Match

Meaning: a short, thin stick made of wood or cardboard and covered with a special chemical at one end that burns when rubbed firmly against a rough surface

Examples: Don’t let your child play with matches.

Knife

Meaning: a sharp blade (with a handle) used for cutting.

Examples: I prefer to use a knife and fork.

Lantern

Meaning: a lamp in a metal case with glass sides and a handle on top. It used to carry light when outside.

Examples: Light up the lantern.

Map

Meaning: a diagram representing the main features/characteristics of an area of land (or sea) such as roads, rivers, hills, etc.

Examples: We need a large-scale map showing all the footpaths that we can walk along.

Trail

Meaning: a path through a countryside, mountain, or forest area, often made or used for a particular purpose

Examples: He was following a broad trail through the trees.

Tent

Meaning: a shelter made of a large sheet of canvas or nylon. It is supported by poles and ropes that are fixed to the ground. It is mainly used when camping.

Examples: Outside the tent I could hear the constant drone of insects.

Pocketknife / Penknife

Meaning: a small knife that folds into a case and is usually carried in a pocket.

Examples: I lent my penknife to someone, but I can’t remember who it was now.

Thermos bottle

Meaning: A container used for keeping liquids (and sometimes food) hot or cold. It is like a type of bottle with double walls that have a vacuum between them.

Examples: There is still a little water left in that thermos bottle.
